International Students Changing Status to F-1

If you are a non-U.S. citizen or permanent resident (green card holder) who is already in the U.S. and would like to change your status to an F-1 international student, follow the requirements and application checklist below.

1. Complete Midwestern Career College’s online Request for Information Form and pay the application fee

Once we receive your request, an admissions counselor will contact you to begin the process. During your admissions interview, your counselor will help you select the program that aligns with your academic goals and interests. They will also review the admissions requirements and application documents to ensure you understand every step of the process.

2. Submit Required Documents

Passport copy with all visa pages and your I-94 arrival/departure record
Your passport must be valid for at least six months at the time of application.

Provide proof of your current nonimmigrant status
Acceptable documents vary by status. Common examples include the DS-2019 and I-94.

Provide proof of sufficient funds
If you are paying your own tuition and fees:
Submit an original bank statement issued within 30 days of your application date. If the statement is from a foreign financial institution, it must be stamped, signed, and accompanied by a certified translation.

If you are financially supported by a U.S. citizen or resident:
Submit an Affidavit of Support (Form I-134) signed by the sponsor, along with their most recent original bank statement (within 30 days of your application).

If you are supported by someone outside the U.S.:
Submit a signed support letter and the sponsor’s most recent original bank statement (within 30 days). Foreign statements must be stamped, signed, and accompanied by a certified translation.

Provide Proof of High School Graduation
Submit a copy of your high school diploma or transcripts showing the graduation date, along with an English translation.

Working with a lawyer?
Submit Form G-28 if you have authorized a lawyer to represent your case.

Working without a lawyer?
Submit a completed Form I-539 and a letter of explanation describing why you want to change your status, your chosen program at MCC, and how it will benefit your professional or academic future in your home country.

Complete Foreign Address Verification
Fill out the Foreign Address Verification Form with your Admissions Counselor.

Marriage and birth certificates for dependents
If applying with dependents, additional documents may be requested by Admissions.

3. Take Online Entrance Exam

Once your documents are reviewed, your admissions counselor will schedule your entrance exam.

4. Receive your Acceptance Letter and Initial I-20

Once all requirements are met, you will receive an Acceptance Letter and an initial I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility for F-1 Status).

Make sure to pay the SEVIS fee and any filling fees needed for your process before submitting your Change of Status request with USCIS.

5. Wait for Status Approval Notice

After receiving a decision from USCIS, send a copy of your approval notice (Form I-797) to your admissions counselor. They will confirm your program start date and issue your Enrollment Agreement.
