Gabriel’s Story in His Own Words

Hello Everyone,

I graduated from MCC in August 2025. I have been a certified surgical technologist since September 2025. MCC is a great college with very professional and compassionate teachers, led by an outstanding, student-focused Director, Ms. Burgess. At age 53, I decided to return to school. Working two jobs (Amazon and Uber driver) while attending school full-time was challenging, but the MCC team supported me in reaching my goal. They were there when I needed extra help with my class schedule, and I am very grateful for that. Now, I am a graduate and a certified surgical technologist. Hooray! Glory be to God. If I can do this, then anyone can.

Jobs in the medical field have always fascinated me. Being a surgical tech is more than a job; it’s a mission. Finding a job as a CST wasn’t difficult for me. A month after graduation, I applied online, secured an in-person interview two days later, and received a job offer a week afterward. Ten days later, I started on-the-job training at the hospital that hired me. Soon, in three months, I will continue my journey to become SFA (Surgical First Assistant) by taking a 12-month class at the college I am enrolled in. This profession challenges you, but you can keep going. The long hours and intense study prepare you for a rewarding career.

To my fellow surgical techs and students, keep pushing! We are an essential part, the backbone of the surgical team, and advocates for patients. The journey is tough, but helping others is deeply rewarding. Persistence is key to overcoming challenges. Failure is an opportunity to learn and grow stronger. Finally, be kind to yourself and prioritize self-care to maintain a healthy mind and body. Progress takes time. I am honored to be part of a life-saving team that changes lives and puts smiles on families’ faces every single day.

Always push yourself, invest in your skills, and never, ever give up.

Good luck to all of us, and may God renew our strength each day!
