Social Media Do's and Don't's

Do’s & Don’ts of Social Media for Healthcare Students

Updated November 12, 2025

Why Your Social Media Presence Matters

As a student preparing for a career in healthcare, your online presence is part of your professional brand. Future employers, colleagues and clinical partners will often review your social‑media footprints. When used wisely, your social profiles can showcase your dedication, compassion and readiness for the field.

✅ Do’s

  • Do create a professional profile on LinkedIn. Use a clear photo, a concise headline (e.g., “Aspiring Medical Assistant | Healthcare Student”), and list your programs, volunteer work or relevant experiences.
  • Do share your healthcare‑related activities and achievements. Whether it’s a community health event, a simulation lab project or an externship milestone—post it (with context) to highlight your commitment and growth.
  • Do engage respectfully and professionally. Like, comment and connect with instructors, peers and professionals in the healthcare field. Networking starts now and builds over time.
  • Do protect your privacy and curate what’s public. Adjust settings so your personal posts that don’t reflect your professional image remain private. Keep your public presence polished.

❌ Don’ts

  • Don’t mix your professional and personal identities without control. Avoid using casual nicknames, unprofessional handles or personal emails on profiles you will share with employers or clinical sites.
  • Don’t leave content online you wouldn’t want an employer to see. Review your feeds: are there posts, live videos or comments that could cast you in a negative light? If so, delete or archive them.
  • Don’t rely solely on one social platform. While LinkedIn remains essential, many employers also review Instagram, Twitter/X, or even TikTok (for healthcare‑related insights). Manage them wisely; consistency matters.
  • Don’t ignore your network of instructors and classmates. These relationships can lead to externships, references and opportunities. Stay engaged and professional with them online and offline.

Professional Profile Quick‑Check List

  • ✔ Your profile photo is neutral, clear and professional.
  • ✔ Your “About” or “Headline” describes your goals (e.g., “Healthcare Student – CNA Program”).
  • ✔ Your public feed is free of profanity, inappropriate images or posts that could undermine credibility.
  • ✔ You’ve added at least one healthcare‑related achievement, volunteer experience or project.
  • ✔ You’ve connected with instructors, classmates, and at least one professional in your field (via LinkedIn or similar).
