Nursing or Medical Assisting

It is an admirable goal to want to help people by working in healthcare as a nurse. But nursing isn’t the only way to make an impact on patients’ lives, and there are several reasons why it might be worth your while to consider a program like Medical Assisting. Here are a few:

Cost

This is a big one. Nursing programs are expensive. According to careerigniter.com, A standard BSN program tuition can range anywhere from $40,000 to well over $100,000. That is a lot of money, and it doesn’t even include pricey books and supplies. Nursing students often have to take out large loans to pay for school, which take years and years to pay off.

In contrast, tuition for MCC’s Medical Assisting program is more affordable (contact MCC admissions for current rates).

Length

Don’t want to spend up to four or more years in school before getting certified? If you want to get into the healthcare field a little faster, a 40-week program which prepares you for certifications in phlebotomy, EKG, and medical assisting like MCC’s program is perfect. In many cases, juggling full time work with a nursing program is a recipe for disaster. You only have so much time, so the faster you can get a good job in healthcare and be out of your training program, the better.

Material

Nursing is very difficult, and definitely not for everyone. Before enrolling in a nursing program, make sure to review the facts. In nursing school, you will need to memorize lots and lots of information. You will need to study a lot. If that doesn’t sound like something you have the time or inclination for, don’t despair! You can still work in a wide variety of healthcare roles, including direct patient care and administrative medical office work, as a medical assistant.
