Midwestern Career College’s Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) Program focuses on educating practical nursing students to develop strong clinical skills and sound clinical judgment, enabling them to deliver safe, high-quality, and effective nursing care.

The curriculum emphasizes the practical application of theory acquired in the classroom and skills lab, translating learning into real-world patient care across a variety of clinical settings and simulation laboratories. The program is designed to prepare students to sit for the NCLEX-PN® and to enter the nursing profession as safe, competent licensed practical nurses.

Additionally, the curriculum supports students in achieving the end-of-program student learning outcomes (EPSLOs) and required professional competencies.

About the Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) Program

The Licensed Practical Nursing program at Midwestern Career College prepares students to develop strong clinical skills and sound clinical judgment needed to deliver safe, effective, and high-quality nursing care. The program integrates classroom instruction with hands-on lab and supervised clinical experiences, equipping students for real-world healthcare environments.

What Do Licensed Practical Nurses Do?

Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) provide direct, hands-on patient care by monitoring vital signs, administering medications, assisting with activities of daily living, and supporting patients across a variety of healthcare settings. These settings may include hospitals, clinics, schools, and long-term care facilities. LPNs work under the supervision of registered nurses as part of an interdisciplinary healthcare team focused on safe, patient-centered care.

LPN Program Curriculum

The curriculum emphasizes the practical application of nursing theory through structured classroom learning, skills laboratory practice, and supervised clinical experiences. Students also develop and refine their clinical judgment in a controlled simulation environment before entering clinical settings. The program is designed to prepare graduates to pursue licensure by sitting for the NCLEX-PN® and to function as competent, entry-level practical nurses within the healthcare profession.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Apply the nursing process to provide safe, quality care for patients across the lifespan with common, well-defined healthcare needs.
  2. Demonstrate clinical judgment in a systematic and organized manner when making patient care decisions.
  3. Safely perform and coordinate patient-centered nursing care.

Clinical Training

Midwestern Career College’s Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) program includes 360 hours of clinical training, combining simulation-based learning with supervised clinical experiences. Students practice in MCC’s Simulation Lab using high-fidelity MedVision adult manikin Leonardo, pediatric manikin Arthur, and the Gaumard mid-fidelity birthing manikin Noelle. These tools allow students to engage in lifelike patient-care scenarios ranging from routine nursing skills to more complex clinical situations.

The Skills and Medication Labs provide structured, supervised practice in essential nursing skills, including medication preparation and administration, helping students develop accuracy, confidence, and patient-safety awareness.

Students complete their remaining clinical hours at an MCC-affiliated clinical partner site, gaining hands-on experience in real healthcare environments.

This comprehensive clinical training supports students’ transition from the academic setting into professional nursing practice by reinforcing clinical competence, confidence, and readiness for patient care.
