St. Bernard Hospital is seeking an Ultrasound Technologist

Department: Radiology

Position Title: Ultrasound Technologist (Sonographer)

Reports to Diagnostic Imaging Manager

I.                    Job Summary:

The Ultrasound Technologist performs diagnostic sonographic examinations utilizing ultrasonic equipment to locate, evaluate, and record critical functional, pathological, and anatomical data.  S/he schedules and coordinates tests; records test results, and prepare and maintain operational logs.  The Ultrasound Technologist calibrates and maintains equipment and orders supplies when needed. 

II.                 Qualifications:

Required Education: Graduate from an AMA-approved school or the combination of education, knowledge, skills, mental development, and relevant experience that enables performance of all aspects of the position. ARDMS (American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers) or ARRT(R)(S) (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists). Registry is required within the first year of employment.  

Desirable Education:  An Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in a related field.

Required Experience: A minimum of two (2) years of experience as an Ultrasound Technologist (Sonographer).

Desirable Experience: A minimum of five (5) years of Ultrasound (Sonographer) experience in Imaging in a health care setting.

III.              Required Skills:

The following skills are necessary in order to perform the duties in the manner required: higher level of comprehension, skills, and ability, as well as continued learning is expected with increasing length of job experience.

Special Skills:

  • Must be knowledgeable of the principles of growth and development and where appropriate, demonstrate care practices related to the physical and emotional needs of neonates (0 -30 days), pediatric patients (31 days-14 years of age), adult patients (15 – 64 years of age), and geriatric patients (65 and older years of age).

Language Skills:

  • Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to read internal and external documents as pertains to job function.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from subordinates co-workers, supervisors, and/or management.

General

  1. Prepare examination room, equipment, and materials as needed for patient.
  2. Follow prescribed techniques which include, but not limited to, adjustment of equipment; arranged immobilization; and support devices to obtain proper positioning of patient.
  3. Observe patient and machine during procedure and report unusual occurrences and record patient’s condition.
  4. Maintain adequate inventory of all necessary supplies.
  5. Perform general office duties, write reports, (with Radiologist consent), and any deemed necessary to maintain a controlled and functional department.
  6. Retain on-call status and rotating shift as required to meet departmental needs.
  7. Help maintain quality assurance, quality control, and maintain records as defined in departmental policies.
  8. Conduct on-going in-services for Hospital staff regarding patient preparation, length of exam; area of interest, order for exams, etc.
  9. Enter and retrieve information from computer, as necessary.

  6. Observe patients and equipment during procedure. Report unusual occurrences and record patient’s condition.
  7. Providing clear, precise, timely and accurate documentation including a written summary of findings to the physician.
  8. Maintain appropriate supply inventories.
  9. Perform general office duties and write reports.
  10. Transport unit to patient’s room, emergency room, and surgery for the purpose of obtaining diagnostic exams.
  11. Maintain awareness of comfort and safety needs of patients.
  12. Participate in department or unit quality improvement activities.
  13. Advocate and support the department and hospital.
  14. Achieve and maintain competency in skills and comply with policies associated with the skills inventory.
  15. Demonstration and maintenance of competency through certification by a nationally recognized sonography credentialing organization.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Performs administrative duties which include: maintaining statistical records of workload; maintaining records of hours worked; operating and manipulating automated systems such as Composite Health Care System (CHCS) and electronic medical record (EMR); participating in education programs and in clinical staff quality assurance functions and Process Action Teams.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:  Completion of the following:

  • Must have a current certificate/diploma from a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited national, state or military trained school.

Experience:  Candidates must have the following experience:

  • Shall have provided services as a Neurology Technician a minimum of 12 months within the past 24 months. The 12 months do not have to be consecutive.
  • The Neurology Technician shall have at least one year of supervisory and trainer experience in a Neurology Lab (civilian or military).

Security:

  • Must be US Citizen
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work site

License/Certification and Training:

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) from American Heart Association (AHA)
