English for Healthcare (ESL)

Midwestern Career College’s English for Healthcare courses are for upper-level (C1, C2) ESL students who wish to develop language and communication skills needed to work effectively within the U.S. healthcare system.

What You’ll Learn

The English for Healthcare track of ESL program is designed for non-native speakers of English who have a background in the medical field but require additional English language skills specific to the medical field. The program is also intended for students who wish to improve their language skills to pass Occupational English Test (OET) for Healthcare Professionals.

The program courses aim to help students grow their capacity to communicate in a healthcare setting by focusing on English reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Through readings, role-plays, listening activities, and discussions, students will learn how to communicate effectively with patients and allied healthcare workers. The courses will also cover vocabulary and language structures related to basic medical terminology, medical law and ethics, and human health and disease conditions.

To take English for Healthcare courses, students must complete and pass ESL040 Intermediate Grammar, Reading, Listening and Speaking, and Writing or earn a minimum total score of C1 (Upper Intermediate) or higher on the Michigan EPT.

Accreditation

The Midwestern Career College English as a Second Language Program is accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation for the period August 2018 through August 2033 and agrees to uphold the CEA Standards for English Language Programs and Institutions. CEA is recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education as a nationally recognized accrediting agency for English language programs and institutions in the U.S. For further information about this accreditation, please contact CEA, 1001 N. These courses are not accredited by the Commission of the Council on Occupational Education and do not qualify for Title IV financial aid assistance.

English for Healthcare Objectives

The overall goals of these courses, together, are to help students to:

Demonstrate English reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills at a level sufficient to communicate effectively with English speaking patients, family members of patients, and medical practitioners.
Apply principles of effective interpersonal, cross-cultural, and nonverbal communication.
Collaborate effectively with classroom work partners and in classroom work groups.
Use clear and correct English to complete a variety of healthcare-related written tasks, including note-taking, note-transcription, letter writing.
